Introduction
Martijn Willemsen is an associate professor at Eindhoven University of Technology and the Jheronimus Academy of Data Science in Den Bosch. He conducts research on Recommender Systems and explainable AI, aiming to apply his knowledge of human decision-making processes to the development of more human-centered AI. He earned his PhD cum laude at TU/e and shortly afterward received an NWO Veni grant, which allowed him to spend a year at Columbia University (New York) developing a web-based process-tracing tool. His interest in data analysis and decision support led him to the field of Data Science and AI. He is actively involved in various ACM conferences in this area, such as RecSys, IUI, and UMAP.
As one of the senior members of the Recommender Systems community, he was a lead organizer of ACM RecSys 2021, held during the height of the COVID pandemic at the Beurs van Berlage. The conference, with 300 in-person participants and 800 online attendees, was a great success thanks to the fantastic hybrid setup developed in collaboration with the Beurs’ professional AV team.
