In 1903, the famous “Beursbengel” (Exchange Bell) rang daily in what was then the Goods Exchange Hall, now known as the Grote Zaal (“Great Hall”). This was where trade in commodities such as pepper, coffee, cocoa, sugar, and oil took place. Every morning at five to nine, the bell signalled the start of the trading day, and buyers and sellers closed their deals.
