Supporting young talent at the Beurs van Berlage
Anouk de Klerk, HR manager at Beurs van Berlage: “For the Beurs van Berlage, the Iconen van de Stad programme (a co-creation of the Municipality of Amsterdam, ROC Amsterdam, Amsterdam&Partners, and the business sector) is an important initiative to connect MBO students with Amsterdam-based companies. It is also a unique opportunity for the new generation of skilled specialists—our future Icons—to get acquainted with remarkable, iconic organisations in Amsterdam.
At the Beurs, we believe that we can only achieve top-tier quality and service with teams composed of diverse backgrounds, perspectives, and talents. As a diverse organisation, we offer numerous opportunities within our various departments—from building management and facilities to banqueting, front office, events, and AV—including 16 internship placements throughout the year. By participating in Iconen van de Stad, we can introduce future students to the Beurs in an accessible way, allowing them to explore the roles and career paths available within our sector. This is not only valuable for them but also for us and the entire industry.

Students have already had the chance to explore some fantastic locations, such as Hotel Jakarta, Artis, Nemo, Carré, RAI, and the Concertgebouw. Last Monday, they visited House of Gassan—rightfully an Icon—along with the Beurs, together with members of the Metropool Amsterdam City (MAC) network. These experiences create unforgettable memories!
With an increasingly tight labour market, it is crucial to connect with future specialists at an early stage. A day like this helps us inspire students and showcase the beauty of our industry and profession. Engaging in conversation with these students also allows us to understand what they value and what they seek in an employer. We hope that students share their experiences and that more Amsterdam-based companies open their doors. And who knows? When they eventually enter the job market, they might look back on this visit and choose a career in our sector—or even within our organisation.
My advice to other companies considering participation in Iconen van de Stad: show who you are as an organisation, be open, and show a genuine interest in the students.
