Mervyn Sodeike: ‘A good security guard for the Beurs van Berlage is above all hospitable, civilised and polite.’

Can you briefly explain what ISG Security does and what services you provide to the Beurs van Berlage?

ISG Security is a security company. We ensure that order is maintained during events at the Beurs and that everything runs safely. We also act as hosts, ensuring that visitors are welcomed politely and addressed courteously if they are looking for something.

What makes security at a historic location such as the Beurs van Berlage unique or challenging?

You are always aware that you are working in a historic, iconic building and that you are the face of that building. Furthermore, international meetings are often held here, so it helps if you speak several languages.

What specific security measures and protocols do you use here?

That depends on the type of event and the type of visitor. We often play a role in access control and prevent uninvited guests from entering. In addition, we often conduct surveillance rounds in the various rooms where the event is taking place.

What are the biggest challenges your security guards face during events?

Actually, it’s the same everywhere. When you work with people, you always end up dealing with people who don’t follow the rules. Alcohol and drug use can also cause negativity, of course. Nowadays, we also have to take external threats into account more and more, and by that I mean things like politically motivated demonstrations.

How do you collaborate with other departments within the Beurs van Berlage, such as event management and front office?

Cooperation with the event manager is very important. He or she communicates wishes on behalf of the Beurs, but also on behalf of the client. Together with the front office, they form the calling card, so there definitely needs to be a good rapport! But in addition to cooperation on the floor, cooperation in the area of planning must also run smoothly, of course. Fortunately, that communication is also going very well!

What do ISG Security employees enjoy most about working at the Beurs van Berlage?

They particularly enjoy working in such a beautiful building and being part of a truly Amsterdam location. They are also very satisfied with the cooperation with the Beurs employees.

Can you give an example of a special or memorable experience that a security guard has had here?

There are several examples of moments when the client personally complimented one of our employees, either for their smart attire or their professional approach. That always fills us with pride!

What qualities make someone a good security guard for this specific location?

A good security guard for the Beurs is above all hospitable, civilised and polite. At the same time, they must be constantly alert to everything that has to do with the safety of visitors and the building. That is simply in our DNA.
