Architectural Gesamtkunst
Art, thought Amsterdam architect Hendrik Petrus Berlage (1856-1934), should do much more than just please and surprise: art should express what is, or should be, alive in society. In the art of his time, and in his case specifically in architecture, Berlage wanted to express the desire for ‘brotherhood among all people’. One of the characteristics of Berlage’s work is that all his designs are based on the idea of the Gesamtkunstwerk.
Berlage’s great-grandson, comedian and writer Vincent Bijlo, inherited Berlage’s view that art should say something about the world we live in from his ancestor. The music enhances these stories and the architectural Gesamtkunst element.
