Organising a symposium for 200 to 500 persons

Beurs van Berlage has been hosting symposia for up to 500 persons for decades now. Each year, Beurs van Berlage hosts more than 25, often international, symposia of this size. We feel it is our ultimate speciality to host these groups.

Reasons why national and international clients often opt for Beurs van Berlage for this group size include:

  • Location - right in the heart of Amsterdam’s historic city centre;
  • Accessibility - located across Amsterdam Central Station and around Dam square;
  • Expertise - years of experience with hosting large symposia;
  • Full service - you have a standard all-in package, any extras are taken care of by the Beurs van Berlage;
  • Excellent hotel service - the lowest prices and best conditions, guaranteed;
  • Ample parking facilities within walking distance;
  • Unique architecture - typical Amsterdam style, enhancing the Amsterdam experience.

North concept and South concept

When you organise a symposium for up to 500 persons, you have two options - when you organise a maximum of 4 parallel sessions simultaneously, we recommend the North concept. With this concept, the plenary session is held in the hall next to the catering room, where you can also place any stands and posters you may have. If you wish to organise more than 4 parallel sessions, we recommend the South concept.

This page explains both meeting concepts in more detail.

Reception and registration

Guests are received, registered and can leave their coats in the Beursfoyer. During the stock exchange days, the Beursfoyer served as an open connection between the various stock exchanges. The room accommodated the telegraph office for communications within the city and a post office to establish contact with the country. The many details and overhead daylight give this room a very pleasant atmosphere.

The Beursfoyer can be accessed directly from the main entrance. It is possible to set up a large registration desk in this area to speed up registrations and arrivals. Your guests then go to the conference halls immediately next door.

Plenary symposium hall

The Effectenbeurszaal is usually used as a plenary hall. This is where the stock exchange took place between 1903 and 1913, while the Netherlands Philharmonic Orchestra also used this magnificent hall for many years. This hall too was optimised during the past couple of years. It has magnificent arches that can be illuminated to create a maximum effect.

The plenary meeting hall includes:

  • Theatre set-up;
  • Standard audiovisual equipment: beamer, screen, stage, Internet connection for all guests, microphone, lectern;
  • Standard lighting equipment with additional illumination of the stage;
  • Personnel: events manager, hall manager, technical AV support, toilet staff, cloakroom staff.

Symposium catering room

The Graanbeurszaal was originally built as the site for the corn exchange. Later, this room accommodated the food and options exchanges, among other things. Following drastic refurbishments in 2014, this room is now an ideal catering room that sits up to 300 persons. Because of its size (more than 700 m2), this room can also be used to install posters and stands. Thanks to the warm, light colours and magnificent tile pictures that depict the rich history, this is the perfect décor for networking sessions. The spectacular views of Amsterdam Central Station optimise the experience.

The catering room includes:

  • Poseur tables and buffets;
  • Flower decorations;
  • Personnel: hospitable banqueting staff.

Reception and registration

Guests are received, registered and can leave their coats in the front end of the Grote Zaal. The cloakroom will be positioned underneath the arches, while a registration desk is placed right opposite the cloakroom.

Plenary symposium hall

The Grote Zaal, which is where the commodity exchange used to be held, is the largest of its kind in the centre of Amsterdam. This hall, measuring an impressive 1,570 m2, can be divided by means of a dividing curtain. This can be either a heavy velvet curtain or a transparent white voile, depending on your taste and objective.

The plenary meeting hall includes:

  • Theatre set-up;
  • Standard audiovisual equipment: beamer, screen, stage, Internet connection for all guests, microphone, lectern;
  • Standard lighting equipment with additional illumination of the stage;
  • Personnel: events manager, hall manager, technical AV support, toilet staff, cloakroom staff.

Symposium catering room

The catering room will be set up directly on the reception side of the Grote Zaal, which is also where you can install any posters and stands you may have. The original stock exchange benches where the individual deals were closed, the impressive clock (another design by Berlage) and the magnificent terracotta relief designed by Lambertus Zijl depict the rich history. The hall has many columns and arches that can be illuminated magnificently in the colours of your organisation.

The catering room for your meeting includes:

  • Poseur tables and buffets;
  • Flower decorations;
  • Personnel: hospitable banqueting staff.

Sub-room for up to 200 persons: Veilingzaal

The Veilingzaal is a breakout room on the first floor, directly above the main entrance at Damrak.

Sub-room for up to 200 persons: Administratiezaal

The Administratiezaal can be found on the first floor, in the centre of the building, over the Beursfoyer, and used to form part of the stock exchange.

Sub-room for up to 200 persons: Berlage zaal

The Berlage zaal is a unique and inspiring symposium hall in original condition, with a large stained-glass window and tapestries.

Sub-rooms for 20 to 60 persons: seven smaller breakout rooms

Seven different-sized breakout rooms can be found along the gallery of the Grote Zaal. They were named after the various artists who designed the Beurs van Berlage.
