May 3rd 2020
On Sunday evening, May 2020, the Requiem Foundation from Theresienstadt performs a moving concert drama “Requiem by Theresienstadt: Verdi‚Äôs integral Requiem" alternated with film footage and video fragments from interviews with survivors.

It tells the story of the camp prisoners in the Theresienstadt concentration camp who executed the Requiem of Verdi 16 times in 1943/44 as an act of resistance. The last time was on 23 June 1944 for the International Red Cross and German dignitaries.

The performance takes place at the Beurs van Berlage in Amsterdam as part of the national celebration of 75 years of freedom. The date of implementation on 3 May underlines the theme of “liberation / freedom": on that day in 1945 the camp was officially handed over to the Red Cross.

The concert drama is broadcast live by the NOS.

Executors are:
Murry Sidlin, conductor and creator of the project
The National Youth Orchestra
The Dutch Concert Choir
The internationally established singers Mariangela Sicilia (soprano), Caitlin Hulcup (mezzo-soprano), Leonardo Capalbo (tenor) and Gianluca Buratto (bass).

Theater after the Dam
In the context of Theater na Dam, “Foundation Requiem of Theresienstadt: Voices of Resistance" will show the documentary film Defiant Requiem (2013) on 4 May. This film is about the realization of the concert drama and shows survivors of the choir who tell their story about the performance as an act of resistance.
