The histories of the city of Amsterdam and of the drink gin are strongly linked. The Dutch doctor Franciscus de le Boë Sylvius first distills the drink. He obtained his PhD in Basel in 1637, after which he set up two practices. One of these practices was in the city of Amsterdam. It is also in this period, around 1650, that he makes the distillate ‘jenever’, also called “Dutch gin".

What does this new drink consist of? Its main ingredients are: grains, juniper berries and herbs. These ingredients are then present in large numbers in Amsterdam. It is currently the Golden Age, and many ships with all kinds of goods are arriving. These goods are then of course traded again on the stock exchange.

The Beurs van Berlage opened its doors for the first time in 1903. Yet here too, many grains and spices were being traded. The Beurs van Berlage even has its own Graanbeurszaal. This room is located next to the water of the Damrak. The ships unloaded their loads here, after which the grain was inspected and sold in the hall.

The role of the Beurs van Berlage has changed in recent years. Today it is the ultimate meeting place in the centre of Amsterdam. We naturally take pride in our rich history. And gin is, of course, also part of it. That is why we serve the delicious Damrak Gin in Bistro Berlage every day. This is a wonderfully fresh gin with different citrus tones. In addition, you can taste many more types of gin during the Gin Festival in the Beurs on May18th. Visit the Beurs, taste, and learn all about this special drink.
